Things to Consider When Buying a Women’s E-Bike
With the growing popularity of e-bikes, many women are beginning to choose women’s e-bikes as a convenient and environmentally friendly mode of transportation. Designed specifically for women, women’s electric bikes offer a comfortable, stylish riding experience that’s perfect for commuting, shopping, or taking a leisurely ride around town. These e-bikes are equipped with high-powered motors that make riding a breeze, and women can travel farther and faster than ever before.
Not sure how to choose the best e-bike for you? Here are some things to consider.
Classes of E-Bikes
There are three different “classes” of e-bikes. Class 1 and Class 3 e-bikes can also be called “pedal assist” bikes. This is because they still require you to pedal to move forward.
Class e-bikes have a top speed of 20 mph. They can have throttles, but the throttle will not engage unless you are actively pedaling.
Dampers
Level 2 e-bikes also have a top speed of 20 mph, but may have throttles that work without pedaling. This is very helpful for starting from a stop, especially if the bike is heavy or is transporting cargo.
Class 3 e-bikes travel the fastest, up to 28 mph. They may or may not have a throttle, but the throttle will not engage unless you pedal.
Most cities and states allow all three classes without any special permits, but laws and regulations vary from state to state and city to city, so you may want to check before choosing a bike. Also note that in many areas, electric mountain bikes are not allowed on trails, regardless of class.
Motors
Most e-bike motors are supplied by a few major brands. The most common are Bosch, Yamaha, Shimano,
These “brand name” motors are usually very reliable and backed up by excellent customer service. You will find cheaper ebikes with off-brand motors, some of which actually perform quite well! That being said, it’s always a bit of a risk when buying off-brand motors. Make sure you read the reviews first!
The power of the motor is measured in watts and the torque of the motor is measured in Newton meters. Both of these numbers will give you an idea of how much boost you will get. The higher the watts and nanometers, the more power.
There are also two types of e-bike motors: “center drive” or “hub drive”. Mid-drive motors are located on the bottom bracket near the crank. Hub drive motors are located in the hub (center) of the bicycle wheel – usually the rear wheel.

We usually prefer center drive motors, although hub drive has many benefits. Hub drive motors are cheaper and require less maintenance, which appeals to women who are just starting out on their bikes.
Mid-drive motors offer a smoother experience, while hub-drive motors can be a bit erratic. (Some are better than others).
Batteries.
Many people pay a lot of attention to the motor and not enough to the battery when buying an e-bike. A more important unit of measurement than watts is watt-hours (or Wh). This tells you how much power you’ll get and for how long. the more Wh, the longer you can ride before charging.
You should also consider how long it takes to charge the battery. For most e-bikes, you will plug the charger into the battery while it is still installed on the bike. Others allow you to remove the battery and charge it indoors. I really like batteries or chargers that have some sort of indicator light that lets you know when they are fully charged.
The battery is charged.
Another thing you may want to be aware of is how visible the battery is. Some bikes have a bulky battery mounted on the downtube of the frame, while others become more streamlined and barely noticeable. Whether this is important to you or not is entirely up to personal preference.
Weight.
The motor and battery add to the weight of an e-bike compared to a regular bike. With electric assist, you may not notice much weight while pedaling, but it can still make the bike more challenging to maneuver, load onto a bike rack, or carry upstairs. Petite women should be especially weight conscious when shopping.
Frame design (step-by-step)
If you choose an e-bike for commuting, you may want to consider a step-through frame. These frames have lower sloping top bars (or top tubes) and are often referred to as women’s frames.
These lower step-through frames make it easier for shorter women to get on and off their bikes. They also allow you to wear skirts if you wish.
Ability to carry gear
What (if anything) do you plan to carry? A water bottle? Make sure the bike you want has a water bottle holder.
Your laptop and work supplies? Look for a bike with a rear rack so you can add guard rails.
Groceries, dogs and children? An electric cargo bike with plenty of storage space in the front or back will be your best bet.
Online Bike Shops vs. Local Bike Shops
Many of the electric bikes that have come on the market in the past few years are direct-to-consumer. In other words, you can buy them online and have them shipped to your home instead of buying them at a local bike store.
This is both a good and a bad thing. As far as the merchandise is concerned, it usually gives you a better price because the middleman has been cut out. It also gives you more options than you would have at your local bike store.
On the other hand, you tend to get better support (and support the local economy) when you shop at your local bike store. If you have a problem with your bike, you can always take it back to the store for repairs. If you’re not very mechanically savvy (or don’t have a mechanically savvy spouse or friend), then buying from a store may be a better option. This also means that you usually won’t be able to order online with some level of quality control.
